A Family Tradition

Stuart Land & Cattle Company stands as a testament to nearly three centuries of dedication, resilience, and family heritage. Since Governor Patrick Henry granted the original deed for what became Clifton Farm to Henry Smith II, our story has been one of generations united by a shared commitment to the land and livestock. From those early days with Henry Smith II and Mary Strother Smith—among Russell County’s first settlers—to the union of their great-granddaughter Mary Taylor Carter with William Alexander Stuart, the foundation of Stuart Land & Cattle Company was laid with love and purpose.

For over 250 years, this family-owned ranch has weathered the tides of change—contracting from over 100,000 acres to today’s 16,000+ acres, evolving through ventures in commercial Hereford beef cattle, commercial sheep, a registered holstein dairy, burley tobacco, timber, coal and gas—all while consistently returning to what lies at our heart: breeding exceptional cattle. Today, the herd is supported by an aggressive artificial breeding program to produce black Angus-Simmental cross-bred animals. Our legacy is not just in the land or the livestock, but in the people—family members and dedicated employees alike—who carry forward the values and traditions passed down through the generations.

Here, family is everything. The roots that bind the Stuarts and our extended ranch family run deep, with many of our team representing second and third generations of stewardship and care. This is more than a ranch—it is a living legacy, a shared journey rooted in heritage, hard work, and unwavering commitment.

As you pass by our sprawling grounds just off Route 19, remember that what may seem like just a glimpse of Southwest Virginia is, in fact, a vibrant chapter of American history—one that continues to thrive because our family remains at its heart, nurturing both the land and the future.
